Archies remain unbeaten after edging the Dodgers

Archies 15, Dodgers 14

The Archies stayed in the win column with a dramatic 15 to 14 victory over the Dodgers.
The game went back and forth, exchanging leads a few times in the later innings. Tied at 14 going into the bottom of the 6th, the Archies got the lead runner on base. The Dodgers threw the ball away going for the double play on the next batter, allowing the Archies to push the runner to 3rd base. An intentional walk and a single through the infield led to the 15 to 14 win. The Archies remain undefeated atop the 16-team standings. – Richard Steinmetz

“If we were the home team, we might have beaten them. We couldn’t have been any closer to beating them,” said Dodgers Manager George Cliffords.

The Archies under manager Richard Steinmetz have been one of the most competitive teams in the LA Senior Softball League, often going deep into the playoffs. The team is just one of multifarious endeavors by the indefatigable Steinmetz. He is an actor by day – as in daytime TV – with featured roles in soaps such as “Days of our Lives” and “Passion”.

The Chicago native and long-time restaurant owner preceded Anthony Bourdain in the 1990s by taking television audiences to various countries to teach them about how different foods are prepared and enjoyed. The first was a 1995 documentary called “Taste of the Sea,” followed by a series about great food from the oceans.

And on Friday nights, the 65-year-old can be found on the gridiron, coaching special teams for the Venice High School Football team.

Softball Junkies 12, Knicks 6

The Junkies, inspired by the absence of team manager Greg Loria, who was undergoing knee surgery at game time, scored four runs in the first inning and cruised to victory against the Knicks. “Win one for the gimper,” was the rallying cry heard in the dugout as the team huddled pre-game. Knicks manager Mike Giangreco picked up a pitcher, Rob Ritter, at the midseason mini-draft for new players and immediately put him in the lineup. After that rocky start, Ritter pitched effectively the rest of the way. The Junkies at 4-1-1 are tied for third place in the standings with Slow Horses. – Bill Tarrant

Slow Horses 16, Trash Pandas 8

The old grey mares had a winning night. Great defensive plays by several members of the Slow Horses kept the Pandas from breaking the game open. Most notable were two exceptional defensive plays by Gil Bautista at shortstop. The Pandas played well, led by Phil Gurnee, who had 3 hits plus an intentional walk. It was a close game until the last inning when the Horses scored six to ice the game. - John Gillot

Mudhens 17, Hip Replacements 6

The visiting Mudhens showed no mercy to the Hip Replacements, putting up a 4 spot in the first inning and never letting up. The highlight for the Hipsters was Blayne Pacelli’s laser beam up the middle that nearly ripped Hip Replacements manager Doug McIntyre’s thumb off his left hand after he darted off the bag to avoid taking the line drive to the face. Had McIntyre stayed put he likely would be dead, but the inning would have remained alive. – Doug McIntyre

Nutcrackers 10, Silver & Black 9

It was an intense back-and-forth game. Behind 10-9, S&B had the lower part of the order coming up and time was running out. But S&B loaded the bases with two outs. Their last batter hit a line drive over the head of substitute second baseman Annie Goto – who jumped up and made an amazing catch. The umpire called the game because of time as the home team Nutcrackers were batting. The Nutcrackers are 5-2, good for 5th place in the standings. – Carlos Arias

Red Sox 20, Grays 19

The Red Sox are entrenched in second place after this slugfest with the Grays.
